2020 Medicare Physician Fee Schedule Proposed Rule Summary and Charts

NAEC annually provides its members with a detailed summary of the Medicare Physician Fee Schedule (MPFS) Proposed Rule, along with charts showing the relative value units and payment rates. This year we did two summaries to provide additional details on the new EEG codes.
- MPFS Proposed Rule: Most noteworthy for epilepsy centers are proposed increases in evaluation and management (E/M) services taking effect in 2021. CMS decided not to pursue its planned consolidation of the E/M codes and is maintaining the current 5 levels of outpatient E/M coding for existing patients and 4 levels for new patients and is creating new add-on codes for prolonged services and complex services related to a patient’s serious or complex chronic condition. CMS estimates that the impact on neurology will be +8% in 2021. Please find the summary of the MPFS rule and charts here.
- MPFS Proposals for New EEG Monitoring Codes: NAEC is very concerned that CMS is proposing further reductions to the new professional codes for EEG with video recording. A detailed summary of the new codes and the CMS proposed payment rates that was sent out earlier this week can be found here.
NAEC, along with AAN, ACNS, AES and EF, is mounting an advocacy campaign to voice our concerns with the Medicare proposals related to the EEG monitoring codes in the proposed rule directly with Congress and CMS. More information on this campaign may be found here in the NAEC Members Section. Please contact the NAEC office if you need assistance with your log-in credentials for the NAEC Members Section
