For this question, NAEC is seeking the number of patients admitted to the EMU in the past calendar year. All patients admitted to the EMU for diagnosis or evaluation of epilepsy, seizures or spells, and/or evaluation for epilepsy surgery can be counted.
Centers can count EMU admissions from the Emergency Department and other non-elective admissions if the patient was formally admitted and monitored in the EMU and managed by the EMU staff as the primary team. You can also include in the count patients that are electively admitted to the EMU as observation stays.
Centers should not count in their EMU admissions ICU or non-EMU ward patients that receive VEEGs. Centers should not count patients who may be boarded in an EMU bed but were not admitted with the primary purpose of evaluating or managing seizures.
